The Maritime Academy of Malaysia or more commonly known by its national language acronym, ALAM, is Malaysia's premier maritime education and training institution. Overlooking the busy Straits of Melaka, the Academy has a well developed 30 hectare campus.
Malaysian Maritime Academy (ALAM) is graciously moving towards realizing the vision to be a World Class Maritime Academy by acquiring a multi-million Full Mission Ship-handling Simulator from its parent company, Malaysia International Shipping Corporation Berhad (MISC) in February 2005.
The official launching of the Full Mission Ship-Handling Simulator was held at the Simulation Building, Malaysian Maritime Academy (ALAM) campus on 18 May 2005. The ceremony was graced by YBhg. Dato? Shamsul Azhar Abbas, Chairman of Malaysian Maritime Academy Sdn. Bhd. Who is also the President/ CEO of MISC Berhad.
Many important players in the maritime industry which include shipping companies, ports and regulatory bodies attended the launching ceremony. The press conference given by Dato? Shamsul Azhar Abbas was also attended by Mr. M. Adthisaya Ganesen, ALAM?s Chief Executive Officer, En. Nordin Mat Yusoff of MISC and Dr. Rosti Saruwono of PETRONAS, both are members of ALAM?s board of directors.
With this simulator, ALAM now has extensive resources and flexibility to meet specific training requirements of the maritime industry. The simulator features high resolution, state-of-the-art 270-degree visual projection system providing high definition photo-textured visual scenes complemented with an integrated bridge with full range of bridge equipment. In addition, there are three fully equipped bridges each providing a 120-degree visual projection system capable of panning through 360 degrees view.
This is a simulator with an unrivalled quality for marine simulation technology and able to simulate an environment with complete accuracy and reality. Now ALAM can bring experiences of navigating in major routes and ports of the world with more than 100 ship models and more than 70 exercise areas.
TRAINING CENTRE :
The Academy lies 148 km south of the capital city of Kuala Lumpur and 152 km north of Singapore city. Road connections from both cities are excellent. The Academy is unique in that it provides a comprehensive one stop educational and training centre whereby all courses leading to professional maritime qualifications, together with the ancillary safety and management programmes are provided under one roof.
STUDENT ENROLMENT :
To date ALAM has trained more than 30, 000 students many of whom have become respected master mariners, marine engineers, marine surveyors and others. Some have become successful entrepreneurs.
Education and training programmes conducted by ALAM are designed not only to meet but exceed the minimum level of skills and competencies stipulated in the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) 1978 Convention as amended in 1995 and other relevant national and international standards and guidelines.
